Important IRS dates in 2024 for self-employed individuals

Being an entrepreneur is a lot of work and it can be easy to forget a few key dates. To help you keep on top of your IRS commitments in 2024, we've put together a list of dates that we believe are important for self-employed individuals.

Important CRA dates for self-employed Canadians
January 16

Quarterly estimated taxes due

This is the due date for your final estimated quarterly payment for the 2023 tax year. Didn't make quarterly payments last year? All unpaid taxes will be due when you file your 2023 individual tax return in April.

April 15

Tax filing deadline

This is the due date for self-employed individuals—this means you, sole proprietors—to file their 2023 income tax. The tax filing deadline is generally April 15 but can be pushed to the next business day if it falls on a weekend or legal holiday.

Extension request deadline

This is the last day to request an extension to file your individual income tax return. If you won’t be ready to file your tax return by this date, submit an extension request to delay filing your income tax return until October 15. That said, even if you file an extension, you still need to pay any taxes owed by the April deadline.

Quarterly estimated taxes due

This is the due date for your first-quarter estimated tax payments.

IRA and HSA contribution deadline

This is the final day to make contributions to your IRA or HSA for the 2023 tax year.

June 17

Quarterly estimated taxes due

This is the due date for your second-quarter estimated tax payments. Yes, we know what you’re thinking. Even though they're called quarterly estimated taxes, the due dates aren't always every quarter nor do they each represent three months of tax payments.

September 16

Quarterly estimated taxes due

This is the due date for your third-quarter estimated tax payments. See what we mean when we said the due dates for estimated taxes aren't always every quarter nor do they each represent three months of tax payments?

October 15

Extended 2023 tax return due

This is the due date to file your tax return if you previously requested an extension.

Psst... Think you'll forget these dates?

Don't worry! We already did the hard work of adding them to a calendar.
